2012 Shoebox Campaign

Source

Hi Everyone,

Please accept our apologies for not updating more frequently - we are indeed still here - working feverishly behind the scenes collecting in all your parcels and distributing them directly to the families in need.

Its at this time of the year that we ask for something a little different in addition to the usual supplies.

With Christmas and the Holiday season approaching we like to do something for the children in the shelters. Many of them will have fled their homes leaving everything they possess behind.
Christmas Day is no different to a normal day in the week for these families. They have no extended family visiting, no Christmas dinner and no presents under a tree.

We are asking once again, for shoeboxes containing gifts suitable for the following ages:

0-14  boy and girl gifts
9-16 girl only gifts (no teenage boys are allowed in the shelters)

They can have anything - pyjamas, clothing, books, crayons, colouring books, suitable dvd's (they will be checked anyway), toys, sweets, chocolate, magazines - pretty much anything that you know a child will appreciate.

Please, please, spread the word and give what you can. I cannot tell you how heartbreaking it is to see these children in the shelters with absolutely nothing. Yes, they are of course safe from harm, warm and fed - which are the most important things - but surely at this time of year we can do more for them?

I came across these lists for some ideas for the boxes for girls and boys whilst browsing - they may give you inspiration!

Shoebox Ideas for Girls
Shoebox Ideas for Boys (remember our age restrictions)

Please do not send any of the following:

No war related items - guns, knives etc
Nothing of a political nature (books)

All boxes can be sent to our usual addresses listed here:

Thank you so much for your support.

  1. What a wonderful idea. Have found so many things already in my house that are perfect for this. One question - if I have things that are suitable for different ages, can I send them all together or should I put together separate boxes?

  3. Hi :)

Is it possible to drop off bits and bobs at your London address, or is it just for postal deliveries? And if so would that be between normal office hours e.g. mon-fri 9-5?

  4. What happens to women in your shelters who have sons over 9? Where do the boys go? I have a baby boy and I'm sure when he is 10 I still won't want to be separated from him.
Thinking of doing a box for a baby boy of his outgrown clothes but this attitude to boys bothers me.

    1. Hi Alix, Completely understand - I have 3 sons myself and could never leave them. From what I understand the boys are taken into foster care but still have access to their mother/family. It is done out of the interests of the women and vulnerable girls in the shelters - some of whom have been through horrific abuse of all kinds - from male members of their family - not necessarily just their fathers.. It's understandable but yes I completely understand your feelings. Heartbreaking all round.

    2. Thank you so much for doing this. May I just ask whether the boxes are for shelters in the UK or abroad? I know some similar schemes send them overseas and would love to know so that I can target the contents a bit! Thank you again for all your wonderful work!

    3. Alix I double checked with Refuge today - its 14 for boys now - or in rare cases earlier if they 'look like a man' i.e. have the physical strength. I'm so pleased to clear that up and hope that puts you at ease a little!

  6. Hi, I would like to donate some lightly used make up items and nail polishes. I am wondering if there are women who can make use of them as they are in good condition. I am from London. Thank you.

  7. Is there a cutoff date for this? I would love to send a box, but is sending it off this week too late for Christmas?
